Luis “Rick” Caughman

Brief Biography

I grew up in upstate N.Y. in the blue-collar city of Schenectady, with no avenues to pursue art. I arrived in Southern California with my parents and siblings in the City of Baldwin Park in 1978. While working in a factory, I began my pursuit in education at Art Center College of Design, where I received my B.F.A. in Illustration in 1982.

Since college, my art career has followed three paths concurrently—commercial graphic design/illustration, fine art, and college level art education. As a commercial artist, I have created award-winning art and designs for airports, colleges, hospitals, cities, transit agencies and other institutions throughout Southern California.

As a regional fine artist, I have exhibited widely throughout Southern California, curated several important exhibits, created artwork installed in public places, produced commissioned works of art, and have artwork in several permanent collections.

As an adjunct art professor, I have over 10,000 hours in the classroom studio teaching fine art and design. My teaching experience includes courses I’ve taught in 2-year colleges, 4-year universi­ties, and graduate level workshops at both public and private institutions.
